Using SIRS for Chemistry’s Energy Research

The class been tasked with researching the pros and cons of various energy resources available. For this activity North Library suggests using the SIRS database located on the left menu to complete this task.

SIRS is an issue based research tool that will find a multitude of different resources for providing academic articles for your research project narrowed by valid issues on a given topic.

The front page of SIRS gives a list of “Leading Issues” covered by the database, though a search option is also possible to find other issues. As Hydrogen Fuel Cells, Fossil Fuels, and Nuclear Power are the three topics covered in this particular assignment, North Library recommends the following topics: Alternative Energy, Conservation of Natural Resources, and Nuclear Energy.

Each issue is given three tabs of attention:

  • An overview of the topic which basically provides an overview of the issue.
  • A pros and cons tab that provides some great starting resources to read through to give a pro or a con about the issue.
  • A “My Analysis” tab, which walks students through the writing process if the student was assigned a basic research paper about the issue.
  • Below these three tabs, SIRS lists a variety of different types of resources useful for research on any given topic. You can find magazine articles, reference material, editorials on the topic, and graphics. Some topics also offer weblinks to an issue.

SIRS is available to NEHS students at all times on campus, but a password is required for off campus use. Please contact the librarian for information on home access.
